Nigerian Lawyers Now Have Guidelines on AI, Technology & Privacy

The intersection of law and technology has never been more consequential — and Nigeria’s legal profession is rising to meet the moment.

It is with great pride that I share the official release of three landmark documents by the Nigerian Bar Association – Section on Legal Practice (NBA-SLP):

  • Guidelines for the Use of Artificial Intelligence by Lawyers in Nigeria
  • Guidance Notes on the Implementation of IT Solutions for Law Firms and legal Departments in Nigeria
  • Privacy Guidelines for Lawyers in Nigeria

Together, these guidelines represent a decisive step forward in equipping Nigerian lawyers with a clear, principled framework for navigating the rapidly evolving digital landscape, responsibly, ethically, and competently.

About the Guidelines

As artificial intelligence reshapes how legal research, drafting, and client service are delivered, as technology becomes inseparable from modern legal practice, and as data privacy concerns grow more complex by the day, the need for profession-specific guidance has never been more urgent. These three documents address that need head-on, providing practical direction on the responsible adoption of AI tools, the ethical use of technology in legal practice, and the professional obligations lawyers owe to clients in safeguarding their personal data and privacy.

They are not merely aspirational. They are actionable.

How They Came to Be

The guidelines were developed under the distinguished leadership of Boma Alabi, OON, SAN, Chairman of the NBA-SLP, and received the approval of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, a testament to their authority and significance for the profession as a whole.

I had the honour of leading the drafting team in my capacity as Chairman of the Technology & Law Committee of the NBA-SLP. It was a privilege to work alongside committed colleagues who share a deep belief that the legal profession must not only adapt to technological change, but help shape it responsibly.

This is [Your Name], and this work reflects a cause I care deeply about: ensuring that Nigerian lawyers are not left behind in the global conversation on law and technology.

These guidelines belong to every Nigerian lawyer. I encourage you to read them, share them with your colleagues, and integrate them into your practice.
